Speak Truth Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinnedagainst you, and because his works havebeen very good toward you.” 1 Samuel 19:4 In this situation between Saul and David, we see Jonathan’s great love for both men. He was concerned for David’s physical life and Saul’s spiritual life. When he spoke up and confronted his father, he did it out of great love and concern for both men, while he was putting himself in danger. At this point in Saul’s life, he was very unstable. He had already sinned against the Lord in so many ways. Jonathan had no idea how he would react when he spoke in favor of David. Saul could have flown into a rage, but Jonathan made it personal for Saul. He showed him his own sinful actions in the situation. David was innocent of any sin against Saul. He had been a faithful servant to Saul. He loved Saul. Jonathan made sure to remind Saul of all the good David had done for him. While the enemy was whispering lies in Saul’s ears, Jonathan was pointing out the truth of David’s faithfulness. There are so many times, we remain silent when the Lord is telling us to speak up, to speak the truth. We worry for our own safety instead of following the prompting of the Holy Spirit. When God leads you to speak out for Him, you cannot be silent. You must trust in Him and speak the truth for all to hear, just like Jonathan did. If I speak what is false, I must answer for it; if truth, it will answer for me. ~Thomas Fuller~
