Speak out, loudly In April 1945, Buchenwald was liberated. Citizens of nearby Weimar were led through the camp, most in tears, unable, so it is said, to comprehend how something as demonic could come to pass at their doorstep. Once I would have said that it is incomprehensible that the citizens of Weimar, the city of Goethe, would allow this to happen. No longer. We should be reminded, not just of the horrors we inflict on each other, but of our apparent capacity to ignore the process by which these horrors come to pass. We must view what is happening at Manus Island and Nauru, not as examples of evil, there is no comparison to the above, but as a retreat into officialdom and secrecy that seeks to limit our power to object and, in doing so, makes us all complicit. If we do not state clearly and insistently our objections to the inhuman treatment of asylum seekers, this strategy may well succeed. Richard MacNeill, Williamstown.
