Speak to me of things that matter. I once was a hospice - TopicsExpress

Speak to me of things that matter. I once was a hospice chaplain and one of my job duties was to orient the new hires on what a person goes through as he faces death. So I’d put people in a room; spread them out; and have them list the 20 most important things in their lives. Oh--- a couple of the rules…you can’t clump things together, like your children, as one listing. And it didnt matter what order you listed them in. One last rule…under no circumstance can you leave or quit altogether. Go ahead…you do it. I’d mandate total silence. Kleenex was on each table. And NO interruptions from outside/inside the room were allowed. The orientation took 100 minutes. But often folks couldnt leave the room for much, much longer. You see, every 5 minutes I’d come back into the room and force them to cross something off their list. At first it was easy because well, you can easily live without something like your car. You can live without your wedding ring. But the further we got into the exercise, the tougher it got to make decisions. People got angry. People did try to quit. But for many people facing death, life is out of their control. So they had to “play” on. What’s YOUR most important thing in life? I did the list, just like my new hires. And I will tell you that the last thing Id give up on my list was my faith. (Along with Jesus,) I was pleased with my crossings because when I got down to number one… nobody… NOBODY…could rob me of my faith. And because of Jesus, striking my very life off that list was insignificant, because I would live on. He promised. It’s so. Speak to me of things that matter. Consider what’s final on your top twenty list.
