Speaker seeks to contain members of county assemblys By Steve Mkawale Friday, October 10th 2014 Speaker Susan Kihika, has moved to stem the growing rebellion against her by some members of county assembly. Yesterday, she summoned MCAs for a retreat in Nairobi to try and iron out the emerging differences between her and most of the elected leaders. Majority Leader Waithuki Njane, confirmed to The Standard on Saturday the emerging rift between a section of the MCAs and the Speaker. Ms Kihika is said to have marshalled the support of all nominated ward reps and a number of elected ones, as a group allied to the former Majority Leader Mwaura Njenga plots to oust her. Mr Njane further confirmed that all 73 members have been invited for the two-day retreat to try and iron out the differences. “We hope to end the wrangles at the assembly after the retreat so that we can go back and work for the people,” he said. But other MCAs claim that Kihika is doing so to counter the growing rebellion against her in a bid to tame rebel members in the wake of the deepening division over a power struggle for the office of the majority leader between Mr Njenga, the Mosop Ward rep and Njane. “A number of us are not happy with the way she is handling the affairs of the county. She has realised that she needs to stem the growing rebellion, hence, the team building,” said Mr Njenga.
