Speaking Tip #2 Most people feel really nervous before they have to make a presentation. This is normal! There are some things you can do to get the adrenaline working for you and not against you. This will help you do your best when you make your speech. 1. Prepare your speech and practice it aloud as often as you can.(at least 5 times) If you know what you are going to say, this will help you feel confident. 2. Go to the room/ lecture theatre where you have to present and get the feeling of what it is like standing at the front of the room. Visualise yourself standing there speaking confidently. 3. Give yourself plenty of time to get there on the day. Running late and not being able to find a car park is not a good idea. If you are early you might be able to practice the beginning of your speech in the room! 4. Wear something you feel good and comfortable in - this boosts your confidence. 5. Take some slow, deep breaths before you get up to speak. This will help to steady your nerves. 6. When you walk to the front of the room, arrange your papers, look at the audience, smile, then start speaking slowly and clearly. (People speak faster when they are nervous, so try to slow down a little so everyone can hear every word.) You will still feel nervous, but you will give a better presentation because you have prepared well. Good luck with your presentation!
