Speaking last night on the Sinn Féin Property Tax Repeal Bill, - TopicsExpress

Speaking last night on the Sinn Féin Property Tax Repeal Bill, tabled by finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD during his party’s private member’s time in the Dáil, the Donegal South-West TD committed to the scrapping of the austerity tax on the family home if elected to government. Deputy Doherty said: “This tax on the family home is not part of any fair solution. It is a tax on the family home people worked hard for. “Let’s be clear. This tax does not pay for extra services or local amenities. It is simply an extra tax on people who own a home. This is an austerity tax which is being levied on homeowners to pay off the banking debt. “Sinn Fein has a different approach. We would ask those who can to pay more to do so. We are committed to repealing this tax. If we are elected to government we will scrap this tax. Our party will continue to campaign against this tax. “Every Sinn Féin county council candidate throughout the State will be mandated to vote to reduce the charge by 15%, the maximum permitted under current legislation, as soon as possible. This Bill is part of our alternative. It is a simple Bill with a simple aim – to scrap the tax on the Family Home. It would also refund anybody who has paid the tax this year and any of our alternatives or a combination of them would replace the revenue lost. “The cynicism with which the government is bringing in this tax is typical of an arrogant government which is out of touch with the effects their policies are having. Sinn Féin has shown how we can reach our deficit targets in a fairer way. “This tax is one of the crowning glories in the victory of austerity and right-wing anti-society economics. There is still time to defeat it. “I urge every TD here to stand up for those who have borne the brunt of five years of failed austerity and to give the ordinary people a break.”
