Speaking of Bellevue, WA, found some photos on a site devoted to western WA history a while back. Some photos date from the 50s, the rest date from the 1968-88 era. Most signals installed between 1965 and 1983 were combo heads, either Eagle flatbacks or, later on, Econolites with some LFE heads mixed in. With the Econolite installs, it was somewhat common for them to have round door 12-8-8s for the through heads, and square door 12-8-12 left turn heads. Looked odd, but, its what they did. Around that time, they also started using aux. left turn heads that were pole mounted. Originally Econolite 12-8-12s, with some LFE 12-8-12s as well, but eventually those got converted to 12 all arrow heads. Beginning in 1985, Bellevue started replacing the 12-8-8s with 12 RYG heads when theyd do a full-intersection upgrade. By 1988, most 12-8-8 installs had been upgraded, except for some minor intersections east of downtown, the main intersection at NE 8th and Bellevue Way NE, and some intersections between Bellevue Way & 112th Ave NE, north of NE 4th. More of those were replaced in 1992-93, still when an intersection got completely redone. Wasnt until 2002, when Bellevue replaced every combo signal they had with 12 heads, frequently reusing the old mast arms and peds, which had been upgraded in the 90s to ICC and McCain 16 ped heads. Also, prior to 1985, Bellevue Way was three lanes northbound and southbound, except for the NE 8th through NE 12th intersections (those were converted earlier, probably mid-late 70s, as evidenced by the longer northbound Bellevue Way mast arm with the Econolite 12-8-8s and the 3M M-131) Intersections are: 102nd Ave & Main ST 106th Ave NE & NE 8th ST 108th Ave NE & NE 8th ST (from the west) Bellevue Way NE & NE 8th (looking toward the NE corner) 102nd Ave NE & NE 8th 106th Ave & Main ST 116th Ave NE & NE 8th Bellevue Way & Main ST 106th Ave NE & NE 4th ST 108th Ave NE & NE 4th ST Bellevue Way NE & NE 4th (two pics) 108th Ave NE & NE 8th again (two pics from the south leg) Bellevue Way NE & NE 8th (two pics) Bellevue Way & Main ST (last pic with the 4-way)
