Speaking with one the cameramen last evening who had done a good - TopicsExpress

Speaking with one the cameramen last evening who had done a good deal of work in some pretty hostile environments around the globe. He asked, What are your thoughts Dale, on the impossible in survival situations? Never had that question before, but in my survival mind I do not believe in the impossible, just the unthinkable. The human mind has a mechanism that often kicks in during survival situations that negates realities that produce stress and make you think something is impossible. It is called denial and is a critical part of our survival coping mechanism. It allows us to block out existential fears. Denial, is a natural and normal psychological response to stress and difficult situations. Denial is a powerful (and tricky) emotion and in a survival situation you must face reality and not allow denial to control your actions. It is not easy, but it just may save your life. As George R.R. Martin said, “Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it.”
