Special Event Libation Thursday May 8th, Theatre 1, 7.30pm to 9pm In African cultures, the ritual of pouring libation is an essential ceremonial tradition, a way of reverencing the Creator and acknowledging the ancestors. The practice involves the pouring of wine onto Ala (the Earth deity) while prayers are made. This performance, the first major performance for the PhD Arts Practice of Odyke Nzewi, is in reverence to Chukwuokike Abima, God the Creator, and an acknowledgement of ancestral heritage. The pieces performed symbolize the wine that is poured out as the prayers are said, for a bountiful harvest of spiritual rejuvenation and emotional bliss. The performance has three parts: African classical drumming, intercultural ensembles and African indigenous ensemble music.
