Special court facilities for tourists at Suvarnabhumi airportThe Airports Authority of Thailand Plc (AOT) is very much interested that foreigners who are coming to the country or leaving the country have a positive impression of their airport of arrival or departure. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. Only at Thailand’s largest international airport, Suvarnabhumi, from January to August this year, 1980 crimes were reported against foreigners by 1047 suspects. To give them in the future speedy and fair legal redress, with the target of not interfering unnecessarily with their travel plans, on 23 September AOT a new legal service for foreigners started at Suvarnabhumi airport. AOT will provide a courtroom with equipment, including a video conference system. The new court will be a branch of the Samut Pakan provincial court. In this way, judges at the provincial court can hear and decide on the spot on complaints by foreigners. The new tourist court facilities are created as a pilot project to improve the country’s image as a friendly and just tourist destination. If successful, similar services shall open at Don Muang and Phuket airports. Some questions remain, which will decide on the success of the project: Will judges be on stand-by at the Samut Prakan provincial court around the clock and also on weekends and holidays? What about communication and language? Will translaters be made available? What about representation by legal Counsel as the foreigner does not know his rights under Thai Law?
