Special event to commemorate the Word War One singing of Silent Night in the trenches ... A special event to commemorate the World War 1 Christmas truce will be re-enacted at Cappielow, the home of Greenock Morton Football Club on Tuesday 23rd December at 6.30pm. Entry is free. The enactment will be a part of a special commemoration carol service being held at the ground. Young people from the Territorial Army in Port Glasgow and Gourock and the Haven in Kilmacolm will play the parts of German and British soldiers who climbed out of the trenches to play a football match. Similar events are being held this month at some 400 football stadiums and other venues across the UK, including at the grounds at Manchester City, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Stoke City and in Scotland at Lesser Hampden Park in Glasgow, at Ross County Football Club in Inverness park at and Cappielow in Greenock. The local organisers said ‘We have come together to commemorate this unique event 100 years ago, when both sides – in the heat of the battle – started to sing Silent Night, Holy Night, and on Christmas Day played football together and exchanged gifts.’ The service will also feature the joint Greenock and Port Glasgow Salvation Army band, the Clydeside Singers and the Clydevibes singing group, Amber Alexander singing Silent Night in German, Rebecca Greig playing cello and Hollie Fyfe playing the clarsach (harp). Inverclyde’s Lord Lieutenant Guy Clark will open the service which will also contain readings and popular carols. A special WW1 replica newspaper will be provided to all who attend. Morton’s Club chaplain, Rev Dave Hall, said: “The club have very little information on records of players, backroom staff or others closely connected with Morton who signed up to join the 1914-18 conflict or subsequent wars. As part of the carol service, we would hope to read out the names we have, but we would also like to compile a ‘Book of Remembrance’ as a lasting memorial to those who served their country in active service or as non-combatants, for example in the medical corps. We would be pleased to receive any further information in this context by email to revdavehall@virginmedia’ After the service, Bovril or tea or coffee will be provided and available for all. The organisers are grateful for financial assiatcne for this event from The Inverclyde Community Fund and Inverclyde Council through the Provosts Fund.
