Special feature... At the top of the game ‘good players’ are no longer… good enough! After attending my lecture on ‘How to develop dominant individuality in modern football’ at the recent short-course in PMB, Inge Olsen, gave me a very interesting European perspective on the same topic. He fully agreed that one of the latest trends in modern football is to develop and utilize young players who can impose their superior technical, tactical and creative personalities in all phases of play and throughout the line-up. As a reputable technician and director of youth development in a country that has recently produced Martin Odegaard, the 15 year old sensation whose value is at over R145million, Olsen certainly knows the ‘secrets’ of success in at the top of the game. As we continued our discussion it became obvious why African football has abruptly declined in the production of outstanding young players. What successful club in this world would be interested in a young African player whose special/unique natural abilities have been distorted and devalued by English, French, German, Portuguese, etc., contrasting coaching influences? In the process of converting him to alien playing mentalities he was depersonalized of his highly gifted football personality. Afterwards he can only be classified as a ‘good (hybrid) player’. Such average ‘replicas’ have no longer high value in a market where GENUINE young ‘stars’ from Argentina, Brazil or other advanced European and Asian youth academies are increasingly available. Are the African football leaders aware of what the Continent is badly missing?
