Special forecast for upcoming week- Well it’s looking like a week of two halves, we should see sunny and mild temperatures over most of Canterbury until Wednesday. But as we wake on Thursday morning we will experience some of the coldest air this winter as a very cold southerly air flow spreads up the east coast of the South Island. Currently this front looks BRIEF but it will pack a punch we expect icy showers down to sea level with sleet down to 100-200m and snow above 300m for Canterbury, that’s upper parts of the Port Hills, fairly low! Because of the short duration and moisture levels within this front we don’t expect any major issues but it could be hazardous for drivers on many of the alpine passes during Thursday and farmers especially in the hills in Mid/North Canterbury for new born stock. In terms of snow depths we could be looking at 5cm down to 300m, 10cm above 500m at this stage .Ski fields could be looking at 15cm, great news. This is looking like a short and sharp event ; we will keep you posted on any developments, keep in mind it’s still a few days out and things can change. Thanks – RV.
