Special post - Love to post about the unsung heros of baseball. People who are not All-stars, not getting the headlines, the role players. But are no question are need during a long 162 game season. The back-up catchers, the left handed pinch-hitters and other roles like that. For 10 seasons, all with the same team, the New York Mets, Ron Hodges fill that bill. The left-handed hitting back-up catcher. Hodges born in Rocky Mount Virginia, he played his high school sports for the Eagles of Franklin County high in Rocky Mount. Plays his college baseball at Appalachian State. He would be drafted 3 times, (Orioles, Royals and Braves), before the 4th time in 1972 January secondary draft by the Mets. Wears the number 42, the 4th last Met to do so, before it was retired by baseball for the great Jackie Robinson. He breaks into the big leagues in June of 1973, he makes his only post-season appearances of his 10 year career, in the World Series, of course a role appearances, a left-handed pinch hitter. Hodges played in 666 games, 445 of those games he worn the gear of the master behind the dish, in which he started 369. Given the regular catcher a day off. The other 221 games, ask to give the team help with his bat has that left-handed specialist. Im sure anyone who never played in the big leagues, and loves baseball, would change places with Mr. Hodges in a heart beat....Thanks Ron for being one of those 1,000 unsung heros
