Spectrum has so much impressive capability coming through the door today (Sunday), that I am intimidated to be here. Starting the action at 3 PM: Melinda Faylor, piano Holly Nelson, violin Leighanne Saltsman, soprano Chant dextase dans un paysage triste Olivier Messiaen: Early chamber and solo works The title to Messiaens second prelude in his Preludes pour piano is Chant dextase dans un paysage triste, which translates into: Song of ecstasy in a landscape of sadness. In fact, the preludes were composed shortly after his own mother, the poet Cécil Sauvage, passed away. Similarly, the song cycle Harawi is subtitled Chant damour et de mort (song of love and death) and was composed at a time when his first wife Claire Delbos began to suffer from a botched operation which would eventually lead to her mental deterioration and death. The Theme et Variations was composed by Messiaen for his wife as a wedding present. She was a violinist, and the two performed the work together. Musicians Leighanne Saltsman, Melinda Faylor, and Holly Nelson enjoy diverse careers in New York City, traveling in new music, classical, pop, and rock circles. For this event, they bring their shared love for the magic of Messiaen to some of his smaller chamber works.
