Speeding/Reckless Wreckers This will be posted on both pages because of the amount of complaints on this issue. This has been an issue for a long time. Theres somewhat a reason why they are speeding but its not an excuse and should not be tolerated. From my understanding they have a chip system where they put their chips in a hat and its drawn. Whos ever chip is drawn gets the tow. If they dont make it there in time then they miss out on the chip. Therefore you see them speeding to get to the next wreck or see ten of them at an accident seen. Again this doesnt excuse the speeding and reckless driving that several people have mentioned. There may be a need to change the way they do business such as a rotation or something where theyre called to tow vehicles if they cant slow down. The following was posted on the internet by Constable Jones. Im not sure how old it is but its worth giving it a shot. Wrecker Drivers What can be done about wrecker drivers speeding in Highlands and driving reckless? We in Precinct 3 have a major traffic problem driving the morning and evening rush hours. Main Street (FM 2100) was not built to handle all the traffic from the Huffman, Crosby, Highlands, and Lynchburg areas. In saying that, it is more important now than ever before to drive defensively at or at times below the posted speed limit allowing for an even flow of traffic at a safe speed. Northshore, Channelview, C. E. King, and Northeast Houston have the same problem. We have stepped up our traffic enforcement in all areas along with the Sheriff’s Department and DPS with some progress in slowing the traffic flow. Your question refers to wrecker drivers speeding in the Highlands area. Wrecker companies or drivers are bound by the same speed limits and laws of the road as you and I are. If they are enroute to a wreck or tow, they must abide by the speed limit and cannot drive reckless or with disregard for the safety of the public. We have cited numerous wrecker drivers for speeding and unsafe driving and will continue to do so without exceptions. Highlands is a small community with a big traffic problem. If you see or have an encounter with a speeding wrecker or a wrecker driver driving in an unsafe manner, you should report it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department Wrecker Division at 713-672-8853. The wrecker division enforces and regulates the county licensing of tow trucks, amounts they can charge for a county tow, and their behavior at tow scenes. You should first get the name of the tow truck company, the color of the vehicle, and any special markings or identification numbers on the vehicle and if possible, the Texas license plate number before you call and report an incident. For any additional information, you may call my office at 281-427-4792. Wreckers and wrecker drivers provide an important service to law enforcement and the community. At accident scenes, they help with traffic control and assist in clearing the roadway for traffic to start moving again. Like anything else, you have law-abiding safe driving wrecker operators and you have the ones we want off the road, the reckless ones who endanger our public streets and roadways and insist on violating the speed limits. Thank you, Constable Ken Jones
