Spending a solitary week at US No.1 on this day in 1966, ? & The Mysterians with the mighty Garage classic 96 Tears. Written by vocalist Rudy Martinez aka ? in 1962, the song was first released on the tiny Texas label Pa Pa Go before being picked up by Philly-based Cameo. With its instantly recognisable organ licks courtesy of Frank Rodriguezs Vox Continental, the song has been credited with kickstarting the Punk movement and has inspired covers by artists as diverse as Big Maybelle, The Cramps, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Tom Club, Iggy Pop, Aretha Franklin and Inspiral Carpets. Ranked No.213 in Rolling Stone magazines 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, 96 Tears became a hit for The Stranglers when their cover made UK No.17 in 1990.
