Spending the first of five weeks at US No.1 on this day in 1961, Texas-born singer/actor Jimmy Dean with Big Bad John. Co-written with Roy Acuff, the song is a prime slice of American folklore reminiscent of Paul Bunyan, and won Dean a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording the following year. Building upon its success, Dean released a sequel, The Cajun Queen, which peaked at US No.22 (US C&W No.16) in 1962.
