Spending time with my brother D.Channsin on location and reconnecting with Eric was so great today. I think the whole day was so grounding in many ways. After leaving St. James AME we headed down to their social services location just down the street. But just prior to that D.Channsin caught me in a moment of reflection. I was standing there in an area I knew well and taking in all the changes that had taken place. I was also a bit tired from lack of sleep from the last few days. Once we arrived at the social services center we entered one of the many amazing structures along MLK Blvd in that area. I had forgotten the majestic glory that Newark once had and all the amazing architecture in the city. We were given a tour of the building by the Executive Director Vesta Godwin Clark. The building had just recently survived a fire and was still being repaired. But the detail and workmanship was breathtaking. As Vesta took us through the building explaining the tireless work they do to help a handful of needy families, I found myself trying to control an almost overwhelming feeling of both sorrow and frustration. Just the thought that not more than a few days ago I met a woman who can afford a property where she pays over $45k just in taxes alone and then to be in a place where they can barely make the meager payroll they have. At this time they can only serve about 50 families.
