Spent last week with the Army Cadets at the Jungle Warfare - TopicsExpress

Spent last week with the Army Cadets at the Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Canungra which is in the hinterland of the Gold Coast, SE Queensland. Had groups of about 20 cadets on tier 3 at my stand. Cadets had to negotiate a rocky creekline of about 1.5 k after which they were confronted by a waterfall which they had to ascend by way of an elevating high line and then descend by way of abseiling. Here below is the highline. By and large they operated it. I initially gave instruction to a volunteer out of the crowd. Then under my supervision this person organised how things operated. No mechanical advantage was used for hoisting operations. It was all man power and they all had to work. Cruel and ingenious eh. Team work was the key and that was the outcome we expected to see. If team work was not their strong point then the results were glaringly obvious. ;) They elevated about 30 metres over a distance of about 80 metres. Abseil was about 25 metres. Abseil was difficult because they were not allowed to swim so they had to do a bit of a traverse at the bottom to keep themselves dry. That didnt work sometimes so a few of them got dunked, ah well, so sad, too bad. ;) All the cadets raved about the stand. They loved it and word soon got around camp. I think Ill get invited back next year. Win. Im already planning on how to mix it up a bit so they dont know what to expect. They keep thinking they know what they will come across each year and I keep surprising them.
