Spent my Labour Day weekend reading an absolutely phenomenal book about the Montreal Expos and the business of baseball in Montreal by Jonah Keri, a former Mtler (and Herz and CBBO alum). An amazing behind the scenes look at the dysfunction of baseball in Mtl right from the outset. To me it was a series of what-ifs. What if the team had had a second baseman between 76 and 84? What if Valentine had taken his career more seriously? What if Kenny Singleton had never been traded? What if the 94 strike hadnt happened or what if the Expos had been allowed to call anyone up during the pennant race of 2003? I could go on and on. So close yet so far so often. I could relate to getting 3 week old boxscores in camp or in Israel. I had the good fortune of attending the Blue Monday game with James Feldman cause it had been postponed and we were off for erev Rosh Hashanah I believe.(What if Reardon had been brought in, early mind you, instead of Rogers) Booing Larry Parrish and feting Nieto (son of Orsolon) the catcher with the cannon of death. Not as big a fan as Mr. Keri, but the Expos were an important part of my youth growing up in Mtl. I remember being in Florida for a Marlins game last year during TCs stag, going to the concession stands and hearing Dave Van Hornes voice through the speakers. I was 11 again. I feel sorry for my kids generation who will never know that annual heartbreak. Great read, great time of our lives. I highly recommend a wonderful nostalgic read.
