Spent my morning with a dozen Belmont (and 1 MTSU) Education majors & 9 kiddos with DS. The students are amazing. They want to learn & have hands-on experience with kids whose needs vary. After 2.5 hours, they each have a small signing vocabulary, several ABA strategies, a great deal of respect for our kids and many successes already in their back pocket, some new buddies and, frankly, much higher expectations for those with DS. Not only that, but they then (within an hour) send me emails asking how they can get even more involved and volunteer with dsamt. And a number of them are headed to a fundraiser tonight. When I was in college I was seriously self-absorbed - very unlike these students. I have no doubt these will all make excellent educators! Thank you Sally Barton-Arwood for helping create this program/partnership. Thank you Julie Julie Jenkins Mayer for helping make it a positive learning experience for the students and kiddos. And thanks to all our parents for bringing your kids to participate. Seeing their smiling faces makes it a great day!
