Spent the last week in Lincoln County on the eastern edge of the state. Here are a few things about Lincoln County...probably way more than you wanted to know. Lincoln County is the third largest area wise behind Nye and Elko. It is also the seventh largest in the whole United States. Its area is 10,637 square miles and of which only 3 square miles (and all not in the same place) are water. The county population is somewhere around 5245 people giving it a density of 0.5 people per square mile. This makes Lincoln 12th in all Nevada counties population. However, it ranks 16th if you look at persons (0.5) per square mile. The only other county that has less is Esmeralda County at 0.2 people per square mile. The larger towns in the county (and use this term with a grain of salt) are Pioche, Panaca, Caliente, Alamo and, of course, Rachel. US 93 bisects the county with most of these towns located along this corridor. The only exception is Rachel. Pioche is the county seat and there are two pictures of court houses in Pioche. The white edifice at the end of town is the current court house. More on that later. Nevada has 62 designated official wilderness areas. Of those 62, 16 if them are totally or partially in Lincoln County. Its kind of tough to go anywhere without bumping into some sort of Wilderness. Coyote Springs..a huge new master plan development sits on the southern end of Lincoln county along the Clark County line. It includes a Jack Nicholas designed golf course that include 11 lakes. I wonder if this is there the three square miles of water in Lincoln County is located. The development; at build out, will have upwards of 150,000 homes. However, it was spear headed by developer/lobbyist Harvey Wittemore. Wittemore got sideways with the law over some questionable campaign donations to Harry Reid. As you can imagine, the development picture is clouded by litigation from just about everybody. I found this article from the Las Vegas Review Journal to be pretty enlightening reviewjournal/news/nevada-and-west/coyote-springs-project-stuck-sand-trap As of 2013, not one house has been built however the golf course is open...I checked. AAAAAAANNNNDDDDDD for my last picture....Im getting better at taking full moon photos.
