Spent the night with a good book called Learning from a kindergarten drop out a journal about time spent with Elder William Commanda. The author his secretary, driver, helper and friend who wrote this book quotes him and I would like to share two of those quotes because he reminds people with every opening prayer and speech he gave, of the responsibility to our ever nurturing Mother Earth, and all of the Great Mysterys creation. First quote, as was also spoken by Chief Dan George in another book I read Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that your money cannot be eaten. The second quote I want to share is In the old days, the river flowed powerfully each spring, and all the debris was flushed out and driven to the salt waters for cleansing. Today, dams trap the waters from the settlements along the river, and create cess pools where water is trapped at the dams. The water is now so contaminated from effluents from industries and communities, and the fecal content is so high, that the beaches in capitol city have to be closed during parts of the summer. And more and more people die of cancer and other diseases related to the pollution of water. People say we need electricity - what about the price? We did not need these dams in the old days; today, are we dying or surviving? And now we have mad cow disease, and chicken flue, aids and sars, and we worry about the killer mosquitoes and the epidemics that are upon us. Mosquitoes breed in water; if the water is poison what will it breed? They use more and stronger pesticides; well, the strongest mosquitoes survive, and get ougher and meaner - look at the size of them in Winnipeg. Forty years ago, we hardly heard. About cancer; today, everyone is dying of cancer. For twenty five years now we hear about the Terry Fox Run; they keep collecting money for research. But it doesnt change anything; things only get worse. Now they begin to question how effectively this money is being used in this research. Just last year we had over a dozen people die with cancer in my community - ling cancer, prostrate cancer, breast cancer. Nothing will chnge till we start to clean up the pollution in the air and the waters. Mother Earth is suffering, and she will revenge against us, unless we transform our abusive and disrespectful relationship with her. We will have to learn to make sacrifices soon, or we will have nothing to leave for our children. That was a good book, I was gifted when we went to Shabatawa, on our way walking to Ottawa, I cant believe it took me this long to pick it up, and finish it in a night. Bur the quotes remind me of walking and praying at each water, and can still see the worst of them, and that all the way from sk to Ottawa, I only saw one ONE clear water. Lets make the changes.
