Spent today sorting and cleaning-- listening to the likes of Rudy Friml and Victor Herbert. It is so easy to see the link between the 19th Century Vienese and the Broadway/hollywood sound that dominated through the 1950s. For those willing to go to youtube-- both of these men wrote remarkable concert music for symphonies, pianists, and others: Herberts cello concertos stand right next to those of Bruch, Brahms, and other major European composers of his youth. For those who recently enjoyed a Nutcracker performance and who now rush to movie theaters to see Into the Woods-- or perhaps watched Wizard of Oz-- or some Pixar animation over the holidays-- It is amazing how toys and fairy tale operas have a lasting attraction. In 1905 Babes in Toyland that took America by storm-- and remained Herberts most loved work-- and was performed often until the 1950s. In the mid-1910s Herbert moved from the height of his popularity- to ghostwriting and orchestrating shows for up and coming composers such as Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Herbert continued to be highly active and influential until his death in 1924. The delightful March of the Toys -- from Toyland is often associated with the holidays-- because of the toy theme. https://youtube/watch?v=cky1RsADdSA#t=108
