Spent yesterday on the banks on the Hampshire Avon in search of a big chub or two. With the levels dropping and a tinge of colour the river was almost spot on for some long trotting. I had promised a young lad Tom Aldous back in the summer that I would take him out to up his PB chub, which stood at 4lb 4oz. We arrived at the river bank just after 7am and made our way to the first swim of the day. I began to feed the swim with maggot, hemp and caster along the nearside crease and 20 minutes later I had landed my first chub of about 4lb. Not a bad start! I rested the swim for 15 minutes and continued to feed heavily. By this time Tom had setup and began his first trot down the swim. The float drifted down about 20 yards, before it buried beneath the surface and was met with a hard strike. The fish didnt fight particularly hard, only having a few lunges at the net desperately trying to get under the near side vegetation in a bid for freedom. But she soon drifted over the waiting net. As I brought the fish up onto the mat we realised just how big it was! It was a very short fish, but with a huge build. I slipped her onto the scales and they swung round to a massive 6lb 3oz! Toms face lit up in disbelief, that he had just smashed his PB on the first trot of the day! We managed around half a dozen chub by 11am all just over 4lb with Toms going the biggest! (Jammy Git!). Well done Tom - glad you had a great day!
