Spider-Man can scale a skyscraper but most ordinary mortals - TopicsExpress

Spider-Man can scale a skyscraper but most ordinary mortals can’t. After all, buildings are too smooth. Turns out that’s a key reason cities tend to heat up more than surrounding areas: the smooth surfaces of buildings, unlike trees, don’t perturb the atmosphere and create vertical air motions that would carry the heat away. This recent finding is based on NCAR-based software that simulates urban climate. The software may also provide insights into other issues, like the extent to which heating and air conditioning systems affect city temperatures. www2.ucar.edu/atmosnews/in-brief/13699/whats-behind-urban-heat-islands #Yale #Nanjing #Environment #Climate #NCAR
