Spinal thought 177. The common instructions for good posture in standing or standing up straight for women usually goes something like this: “Knees together, tuck your bottom under, hold your tummy in, shoulders back, chest up and chin up.” It’s all wrong. The spine becomes distorted, perhaps over-straightened in some parts and over-curved in other areas, and discs get compressed. Just try it for yourself and see how difficult it is to move if you do all those things. Even if women haven’t been directly told to do this somehow it seeps in to our consciousness. In fact a good way to discover that standing does not require effort would be to do all that and then let it all go. When you stop pulling yourself this way or that natural poise and balance can work better.
