Spinal thought 323. Continuing on the theme of clothing and spinal and musculoskeletal health, skirts are often short and tight which also restricts movement in the hip joints and enforces the maxim of “keep you knees together”. It seems totally unfair for women to be restricted by a convention that simply makes movement less free. However, when I teach Alexander Technique lessons to women I try to show that it is possible to maintain free coordination without muscular tension in the relationship of hips and knees to the torso and spine, even when wearing short skirts and wishing to keep the knees together. When I teach the direction “to let the knees be free to go forward and away” I emphasise that “free” means to not restrict the freedom of the hip joints and the knees; that “forward” is where the knees are designed to go and it is in the same direction as the feet; and that “away” does not need to mean away from each other, but away from the pelvis and rest of the back.
