Spoken Konkani language should unite people to fight causes January 11, 2010 HERALD NEWS BUREAU PANJIM, JAN 7 Women Advocates Association President Shanti Fonseca said that spoken Konkani language should unite people to fight great causes. Speaking on the occasion of the 77 years of Vavraddeancho Ixtt at Pai Tiatrist Hall in Ravinda Bhavan, Margao, on January 4, Adv Fonseca said the Romi-Devnagri script controversy in the State has threatened to divide the Goans along religious lines. It is time that the 50 lakh odd Konkani-speaking people in India unite in their fight for greater causes, appealed Adv Fonseca, who was the guest of honour at the annual function. Commending Vavraddeancho Ixtt for crusading issues of common people during the last 77 years, Adv Fonseca said: The credibility and respect of Vavraddeancho Ixtt has always remained consistent despite the script controversy. Noting loyalty of the readers for the last 77 years, Adv Fonseca, who is also the judge of the State Consumer Redresal Forum, said Vavraddeancho Ixtt has remained a paper that has covered issues from land grab to unemployment, from environmental degradation to concerns of human rights violations, from food and water scarcity to the failing and falling public distribution system. Exhorting the largely attended gathering, Fonseca said that as her contribution to Konkani she made sure that her children studied in Konkani medium schools even when others around went to English medium schools. On the occasion, Fr Pratap Naik was conferred the �Xennoi Goybab Puroskar� for immense contribution to Konknni for over last two decades, Pantaleao Fernandes received the �Fr Lactancio Almeida Puroskar� as an outstanding writer of Vavraddeancho Ixtt for the year. The �Fr Nicolau Pereira Puroskar� for the student who scores highest marks in Konknni for the BA examination (2008-09) was awarded to Deepali Devidas Naik, a student of Smt Parvati Chowgule College, Margao, and Fr Carmo Martins received the �Firgojechem Potr Puroskar� as St Aleixacho SAAD was adjudged the best parish bulletin of the year. The chief guest and Power Minister Alexio Sequeira praised the Vavraddeancho Ixtt on consistently running the vernacular tabloid during the last 77 years. The Superior General of the Society of Pilar Fr Tony Lopes was also present for the function. Earlier, Weekly Chief Editor Fr Feroz Fernandes quoting Pope Benedict XVI on the role of media said that amid new technologies, it is imperative to build new relations which are based on a culture of respect, dialogue and friendship. In his annual report, Fr Fernandes asserted that Vavraddeancho Ixtt was committed towards promoting such relationships between religions and cultures. The annual celebration also witnessed a Laughter Riot, a special comedy show by Goa�s celebrated comedians. Comedian Jacob, Humbert, Agostino, Selvy, Anita, John D�Silva, Nato, Peter De Pedda. Ambe, Janet, Jesus, Comedian 64, Hotercio, Shaikh Amair and young Myfanwy, Ciano and Oswin thrilled the packed audience with thunders of laughter and applause.
