Spon Croft Tavern, 1935. I presume the swords at the top of the pub sign relate to the origins of the word spon. During the Crusades it was believed that a locally born combattant during this conflict discovered a piece of the true cross upon which Christ is said to have been crucified; a remnant or relic of this was called a spona. He would have returned to our region where the relic was placed near to a well next to which a cross would be erected. It may be conjecture but of interest all the same.
