Sponsored by The Friends of Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge; The video is an update of our trial run harvesting seed. We went to a 16 acre patch at Ed Gordon WMA today. The patch was dominated by Big Bluestem grass with lesser amounts of Indian Grass. Roger Gunter and myself spent 4.5 hours running the harvester today, covered 3.7 acres and harvested 211 pounds of uncleaned seed. We are drying the seed at an empty storage building on the WMA. I talked with Jake Bokker, AGFC Biologist that loaned us the harvester and he said we are in the ball park on harvest rates. Just watching the machine run it appears we are leaving about 75% of the seed on site. That is because the grass is so tall that the harvesting roller does not align with the seed heads. Jake said that is just what you have to expect when you are in a real tall stand. The Friends Group supports Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge, located in Dardanelle, Arkansas. The video is narrated by President Steve Osborne during this harvest during September 2014.
