Spooky Sort-Of Covers #37: Thelma Houston - Dont Leave Me This Way The backing on this 1977 classic doesnt half sound like Diana Rosss first foray into disco the year before, Love Hangover. It even has an almost identical striding bass pattern, that wasnt present in the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes original; and starts off all slow and moody before bursting into dancefloor life, just like Love Hangover did. Perhaps Motown - never afraid to cash in on a hit by producing something else very similar - thought they were just too alike, because the plan had been for Ross to cover the Melvin song for her follow up. Instead this version went to a more or less unknown artist, Thelma Houston. She did a great job and had a massive smash, but never had much success before or after. beggarscantbevegans.tumblr/ https://youtube/watch?v=ClbGfCaz0AA
