Sports - thats another example of the indoctrination system. For one thing, because it offers people something to pay attention to thats of no importance, that keeps them from worrying about things that matter to their lives, that they might have some idea of doing something about. And its striking to see the intelligence that is used by ordinary people in sports. Listen to radio stations where people call in, often with the most exotic information and understanding about all kind of arcane issues. And the press undoubtedly does a lot with this. When I was in high school... I asked myself at one point: Why do i care if my high schools team wins the football game? I dont know anybody on the team, they have nothing to do with me... why am I here and applaud? It does not make any sense. But the point is, it does make sense: Its a way of building up irrational attitudes of submission to authority and group cohesion behind leadership elements. In fact its training in irrational jingoism. Thats also a feature of competitive sports. - Noam Chomsky
