The Red Sox shutout the Diamondbacks 4-0, the Indians blanked the Marlins 2-0, the Royals walked over the Mets 6-2, and the Rays inched past the Giants 4-3, but the Yankees, dogged by all the talk surrounding the impending suspension of Alex Rodriguez, fell to the Padres 6-3. Back to A-Rod; despite multiple reports suggesting MLB will announce the suspension of Rodriguez today, Yanks manager Joe Girardi announced the embattled ballplayer is “penciled in” to start at third base tonight when the Yankees open a three-game series against the White Sox in Chicago. 3-2 WON: TIGERS, TWINS , MARINERS ALL EARN 3-2 VICTORIES Of the five American League games on the schedule on Sunday, three of them ended with the identical score of 3-2. In Detroit, Torii Hunter’s game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th inning handed the Tigers a 3-2 win over the White Sox, Henry Blanco’s two-run big fly lifted the Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles, and Justin Morneau’s two-run shot and Oswaldo Arcia’s solo long ball was all the Twins needed to knock off the Astros 3-2. Elsewhere, the Blue Jays scored two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to trim the Angels 6-5, and the Rangers felled the A’s 4-0. POWERHOUSE OF CARDS: ST. LOUIS RIPS REDS 15-2 The St. Louis Cardinals exploded for a season-high 15 runs and 19 hits (including three homeruns) and routed the Reds 15-2 to remain a game and a half behind the Pirates in the NL Central. Pittsburgh rolled past the Rockies 5-1. In more National League action, the Dodgers collected their 14th consecutive road win and completed a four-game sweep of the Cubs with a 1-0 victory, the Braves extended their winning streak to 10 after sinking the Phillies 4-1, and the Brewers scored five in the sixth inning and went on to handle the Nationals 8-5. STILL TREAD LEFT ON TIRE: TIGER TAKES 8TH BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL After cruising into the final round with a seven shot lead, Tiger Woods managed to par 16 holes Sunday to with an even-par 70 to capture his eighth Bridgestone Invitational championship, and 79th career PGA tour trophy. Woods’ victory at Firestone Country Club pulled him into a tie with Sam Sneed for the most wins (8) at a single PGA Tour event, and his 79th career win is just three shy of Sneed’s record 82 victories. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: KAHNE’S LATE CHARGE CEMENTS VICTORY With just two laps to go at Pocono Speedway on Sunday, Kasey Kahne pushed past Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and pulled away to capture his second NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the season. Gordon had to settle for second place on his 42nd birthday in his 42nd career Pocono start. Kurt Busch, another birthday boy, finished third, Ryan Newman fourth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. fifth. SUPER BOWL AND/OR BUSTS: BOYS-FINS CAP HALL OF FAME WEEKEND The Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins competed in the annual Hall of Fame game Sunday night, and in so doing kicked off the NFL preseason schedule and wrapped a weekend of festivities surrounding the induction of seven new members of the Pro Football hall of Fame. The Cowboys topped the Dolphins 24-20 with all of Dallas’ biggest stars sitting on the sidelines the entire night. Meanwhile, on Saturday former Cowboys offensive lineman Larry Allen and former head coach Bill Parcells were inducted into the hall, along with Bucs D-lineman Warren Sapp, Vikings receiver Cris Carter, Ravens O-lineman Jonathan Ogden, Packers linebacker Dave Robinson and Chiefs, Oilers and Lions defensive lineman Curly Culp. COLTS HALL OF FAMER, MASTER STORYTELLER ART DONOVON DEAD AT 89 Baltimore Colts Hall of Fame defensive tackle Art Donovan died Sunday at Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore. He was 89. Donovan played a big role in helping the Colts win back-to-back NFL world championships in 1958 and 1959 and played 11 years in the league, but was well-loved well past his retirement in 1961for his sidesplitting stories about football on countless late-night talk show appearances. Some of his most memorable lines include his proclamation that he was a light eater by saying: “When it got light, I started eating.” He also joked that the only weight he ever lifted was a beer can, and he wrote in his autobiography Fatso: “I’ve never been a gourmet eater. Kosher hot dogs, cheeseburgers, pizza, baloney and a couple cases of Schlitz are all I’d need on a desert island.” SIGNATURE FALL FROM GRACE: NCAA INVESTIGATING HEISMAN WINNER Known to many as “Johnny Football,” Texas A&M quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel could be facing a ban from college football if found guilty of accepting a five-figure flat fee for autographing hundreds of photos and sports memorabilia back in January. The NCAA is looking into allegations that Manziel was paid for signing scores of items for Drew Tieman, an autograph broker who approached Manziel during his trip to Miami to attend the BCS National Championship Game on January 6. Manziel could be ruled ineligible if found guilty of violating NCAA rules.
