Sports Update Date:17.03.14 Leopards, Nampundwe share spoils By Brian Mooya PRISONS Leopards kick started their 2014 division one North league campaign at home on Saturday with a 1 all draw against Nampundwe Football Club. The game, which was played at President Stadium in Kabwe amid ear splitting noise from an enthusiastic home crowd, saw the home side dominating the first 15 minutes, but missed several clear chances as they continued misfiring. Leopards were supposed to be enjoying the driving seat within the first 15 minutes but Benjamin Simpamba (striker) failed to level the ball into the net and only fired above the cross bar, with the Nampundwe goal keeper being out of position and the defenders beaten. It was the home side that came close to hitting the net again with only a goal keeper to beat but again, Simpamba’s short flew high in the air. After 15 minutes of the game, the visitors, who seemed to play a tactical game stabilized and started showing signs of wanting to score after terrorizing a well composed Leopards defense. Nampundwe almost scored a free kick after their player was brought down by a Leopards defender near the eighteen yard box but the shot went slightly above the cross bar. The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The last half started with both sides desperately looking for a goal and it was Nampundwe’s Mathews Silavwe (striker) who found the net first in the 57th minute through a rebound from a Leopard goalie, with all the Leopards defenders out of position. The game continued with the home side desperately looking for an equalizer until Leopards coach, Mathews Ndlobvu was forced to make two substitutions at a go. The move seemed to work for Ndlobvu as the home side continued pushing hard the visitors’ defense with a substitute, Geoffrey Chikapite (midfielder) almost scoring after a pass from the hard working Chongo Mulenga (defender) but his header hit the side bar. It was Elijah Banda (striker) who came to the rescue of the home side at last in the 71st minute after he made no mistake by heading the ball into the goal to level the score line. The game ended in a 1 all draw stalemate. Meanwhile, speaking after the game, Leopards head coach Mathews Ndlobvu said he was impressed with his boys’ performance despite a draw. Ndlobvu said the result was just the beginning of many more good things to come and that he will work hard to see his team winning the remaining matches. The result means that Leopards have one point with a goal only. They will be away to Lusaka against Lusaka Dynamos on Wednesday.
