Sports lost 1-0 for the second consecutive week but it could, and - TopicsExpress

Sports lost 1-0 for the second consecutive week but it could, and perhaps should of been, an awful lot worse. At the start of November this side was riding high in league, vase and county cup. They now find themselves out of both cup competitions and down to 5th in a league the club are desperate to advance from in order to match the superb work thats been carried out to the lincoln road facilities. O.N Chenecks are on a good run of form and are very direct. But in all honesty Sports have enough in the locker to deal with this type of football. From the first minute sports found themselves under a stream of long searching balls and set peices. In the main this was dealt with well, with Holt and star man Lenton winning the majority of the aerial battles and standing firm in the heart of defense. It was in offensive areas that Sports struggled as they found it difficult to maintain any consistent pressure on the hosts and rarely threatened the oppositions half let alone area. Constant needless fouls were being given away in the last third with some rash challenges. It was inevitable that cards would soon be given. Although most of his defensive work had been good it was Kev Holt that got the only card of the half and it was to later prove costly. When the ball was being cleared to Odain, he was finding it difficult to hold the ball up with Clements and Barber slow in support. In midfield areas Sports were no where near their free flowing best that had seen them outplay most teams for the majority of the early season. Captain Nyang in constant discussion with the official and perhaps lucky not to see a card. HT 0-0 It was hoped that after a good discussion in the interval that Sports would come out with more purpose in the 2nd period but that was to be short lived. Chenecks created their 1st chance of the half within a minute of the restart with the striker shooting wide when through. Then on 48 minutes the game swung further to Chenecks advantage when Holt received his 2nd yellow of the day for another reckless challenge on the halfway line to see him take an early bath for the 2nd time in a month and cost his team mates yet again. Credit to the 10 that remained on the park as they dug deep and in a strange way the 4-3-2 formation adopted seemed to suit Sports more than the hosts. Clements being freed up more appeared to cause the home defense a few more issues and he was finding little pockets to play in. However it was always going to be hard going to cover all the space with the disadvantage of being a man down. On 70 minutes the deciding goal was scored. A hopefull ball out of defence found the Chenecks player in space 40yards from goal and despite the attempts of Garwell to hold him up he finished well off the inside of the post to win the game. The game suddenly slowed down with the extra match balls disappearing and Chenecks seeming happy to win the game 1-0 rather than try and push home the man advantage more. A lot of post match analysis has taken place and the squad know exactly where they should be and what is expected. Promotion is still a realistic target in a league where points will be dropped by all the chasing pack. Wednesday away to Blackstones is now the next focus and the squad are ready for the challenge.
