Sports with Charlie Crosby: Norwich University Cadets NorwichAthletics Women’s Rugby The Norwich University womens rugby team won its fourth straight match with a 45-38 victory over Quinnipiac University on Saturday afternoon in an all-Varsity matchup. The win marked Norwichs third win over a top-10 ranked team in the country in the last four weeks. Freshman Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vt.) led the Cadets with three tries on the day. Junior Valerie McGuire (Felts Mills, N.Y.) added two more tries as well to continue her recent scoring hot streak. Senior Emily Oor (Uxbridge, Ontario) and junior Ally Day (Gorham, Maine) each added one try, while junior flyhalf Hannah Bell (Newberg, Ore.) went 5-for-7 on conversions to round out the Cadets offense. Norwich (4-1, 3-0 NWRC) built up a 19-7 lead by halftime and led 45-26 late before Quinnipiac (2-1) punched in two late scores. Norwich hosts the Univ. of Rhode Island next Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. on the NU Dog River Rugby Pitch. Men’s Rugby The Norwich University mens rugby team suffered its second straight close loss on Saturday afternoon, falling 18-12 to defending Northeast Collegiate Rugby Conference (NECRC) champion Univ. of Rhode Island. Norwich (1-2, 1-2 NECRC) got tries from Evan King and Michael Dowling, while Michael Blackmon added a conversion to round out the Cadets scoring. Norwich still picked up a point in the league standings since the Cadets lost by less than seven points. The Cadets will look to rebound on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they return home to host the Univ. of Rhode Island at 2 p.m. Men’s Soccer The Norwich University mens soccer team won its fourth straight match with a big 2-1 road victory over Lasell College on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. Norwich (6-3-1, 2-0-1 GNAC) got goals from sophomore forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) and junior forward Ludo Kamga (Tunis, Tunisia), while senior goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made 10 saves to lead the Cadets to the victory. Norwich opened the scoring early in the first half, a well-placed ball by freshman midfielder Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) setup Zimmerman at the top left corner of the 18-yard box and Zimmerman coolly fired a low shot past a diving keeper just inside the right post to make it a 1-0 in the seventh minute of play. Four minutes after being introduced to the action, Lasell struck a swerving ball from outside the top of the 18-yard box that darted left and past Hallstrom just inside the left post to even the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute. Norwich re-took the lead in the 41st minute when a dipping strike from Kamga from 30 yards out eluded found the back of the net to give the Cadets a 2-1 advantage at the break. Lasell (4-4-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) turned up the pressure in the second half in search of the equalizer. The Lasers had several second half chances, including a rocket in the 75th minute that nearly beat Hallstrom. Another chance from in the 82nd minute that delected off the fingers of Hallstrom and toward the goal line, only to see the senior keeper scramble back and stop it just on the line. Lasell outshot Norwich 23-6, including 11-0 in the second half of the match. The Lasers also had 12 corner kicks to none for Norwich. The win not only avenged last seasons 3-1 defeat to Lasell in the GNAC Tournament semifinals, but it also marked Norwichs first win at Lasells home pitch in head coach Kyle Dezotells nine seasons at the helm of the program. Norwich will look to stretch its winning streak to five straight when it hosts Plymouth State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Cross Country The Norwich University cross country teams competed in the Bowdoin Invitational hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday. For the second straight race sophomore Robert Greene (East Hartford, Conn.) was the top Cadet finisher in the mens 8k competition with a 33rd place finish and a time of 28:32.55. Freshman Jarret Cavanagh (Carlisle, Penn.) finished in 35th with a time of 28:40.05 while fellow freshmen Jared Bedard (Tolland, Conn.) (40th, 28:58.67) and Oliver Wood (Colchester, Vt.) (41st, 29:13.23) rounded out Norwich finishers in the top 50. In team competition Norwich finished in fifth place out of eight teams with 137 points. On the womens side sophomore Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) led the Cadets once again with an 18th place finish and a time of 25:06.58 in the 6k race. Freshmen Melissa Hango (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) (30th, 25:54.01) and Haddie Lary (Randolph, Vt.) (31st, 25:54.23) rounded out Norwich runners in the top 50. The Cadets finished in fifth place out of seven teams in the team competition with 117 points. Norwich is next in action on Saturday October 4th for the Vermont State Meet, hosted by Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vt. The womens race starts at 11 a.m. with the mens competition kicking off at noon. Volleyball The Norwich University volleyball team opened up its 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season with a split against Lasell and the Univ. of St. Joseph (Conn.). Norwich (5-8, 1-1 GNAC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets and down Lasell in its second match of the day. The Cadets lost 25-20 and 25-17 before winning 25-23, 25-23 and 15-13 to stun the Lasers. Norwich dropped the opener 3-2 to USJ. Senior middle hitter Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) led Norwich with 10 kills in the Lasell match. Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) and Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) each had nine kills, while freshman Alma Turpin (Sterling, Va.) had seven kills. Freshman setter Katherine Crane (Avon, N.Y.) had 37 assists to lead the Cadets. Sophomore Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) led Norwich defensively with 19 digs, while Palmer tallied 17 and Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) had 14 digs. Mancini totaled 11 kills in the USJ match to once again lead Norwich with a .333 attacking percentage. Lyons and Palmer each had nine kills, while senior Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) had eight kills. Palmer led Norwich defensively with 21 digs, while Ruediger had 17 and Hershberger tallied 12. Norwich will face Lyndon State on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in non-conference action as the Cadets look to avenge a defeat at the hands of the Hornets from last season.
