Sportsmen back TAN Many top sports stars and personalities have backed the Transformation Agenda for Nigeria and expressed faith in the programmes of President Goodluck Jonathan. The group of sport personalities led by such ex-national stars such as Henry Amike, who is the President of the Nigerian Olympians Association, and Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medallist, Enefiok Udo-Obong, said they were satisfied with Jonathan’s performance in sports development and therefore called on members of the Nigerian sports community to support his re-election bid. The assembly of sportsmen which converged on the National Stadium, Lagos, during the weekend had leading Nigerian Olympians, ex-internationals and coaches from various sports as well as representatives o f players. A communiqué was jointly signed by various segment leaders such as Yusuf Alli, a former African long jump record holder; former Nigerian internationals Peter Rufai, Clement Temile and Rafiu Ladipo of the Nigerian Supporters’ Club. The statement made available to our correspondent read, “President Jonathan has demonstrated a unique commitment to the development of sports and has performed creditably well in the sports sector. This is evident in the achievements of various Nigerian representatives in various continental and international championships and his exemplary initiative for reforms following the Presidential Retreat on sports.” The group has tasked itself to mobilise members of the sports community and the public to support Jonathan. Amike, a national coordinator of the group said, “First, it is important to state that we are a non-party group as we have members who belong to different political parties. Secondly, we are all Nigerians and we have a stake in the destiny of our nation.
