Spot-on analysis from my man, Chad Kautzer: “I find this [image] problematic. Having police declare black lives matter detracts from the structural critique of white supremacy (and the complicity of the police in reproducing it) and it dilutes a very powerful and unifying slogan of the resistance. Every cop in the country could wear an armband that says black lives matter and not a single practical thing would change, communities will not be safer, black lives will not be humanized, but the police and their supporters will have a PR victory. In the name of supporting the resistance, I would respectfully suggest folks dont promote these symbolic gestures, when so much structural change is necessary and the movement for it is building fast. …My point/critique isnt about his [this officers] particular action, its context, or what it might mean for the community he is policing. My critique concerns how we, elsewhere, use and interpret this gesture and possibly accept and promote it as contributing to a solution to the structural problem in our own communities.”
