Spring has Sprung and our flower is in bloom! Come out to SouthWind Park and check out the newest member of its skyline, The Rotary Centennial Sundial Sunflower. Workers will be putting the finishing touches on the Sundial area within the next few weeks. Primarily sponsored by the volunteer efforts and donations of individuals from Rotary Club of Springfield, IL, as a gift to the city for its centennial in 2013, with help from its friends at the other four Springfield Rotary clubs, including Sunrise, South, Midtown and Westside -- this is a lasting gift from Rotary to the community-- with help from the genius of Bob Croteau at CWLP and the Springfield Parks Foundation. Within a few months, the flower will create electicity for its own lighting and the petals will be visible at night, adding to the summer light shows at Southwind. At the base, its shadow will create a working giant sundial during sunny days, telling the time and the day ... Another great attraction at Springfield Southwind Park, an model park for all people regardless of disabilities. Photo courtesy of Bob Croteau.
