Spring rains and melting snow make for slippery, slimy, muddy trails. To keep moving forward, focus on spinning your pedals smoothly. Mashing down will cause your rear wheel to spin out and create ruts. Look ahead for the best line through the muck—small sections of gravel or rock afford the best traction. Sometimes, heading straight through a puddle is the best choice. The mud at the bottom can be tackier than the slick, sloping sides.
