John Griffith Chaney, aka, author Jack London had a favorite drinking hangout in the City of Oakland, California next to the Oakland waterfront pier and harbors. That was the location where he loved to drink up with the old sailors and where he also wrote some of his short story masterpieces. While at Berkeley, London continued to study and spend time at Heinolds saloon, where he was introduced to the sailors and adventurers who would influence his writing. In his autobiographical novel, John Barleycorn, London mentioned the pubs likeness seventeen times. Heinolds was the place where London met Alexander McLean, a captain known for his cruelty at sea, on whom the protagonist in Londons novel The Sea-Wolf, Wolf Larsen, is based. Heinolds First and Last Chance Saloon located in Jack London Sq. Oakland, Ca. is now unofficially named Jack Londons Rendezvous in his honor. Jack London wrote many famous novels including, The Call of the Wild, White Fang, both set in the Alaska Klondike Gold Rush. Short stories like, “To Build a Fire.” An odyssey of the north and love of life. He wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as “The Pearls of Parlay,” and “The Heathen,” and of the old San Francisco Bay Area in “The Sea Wolf,” and also “The Iron Heel,” and “Martin Eden.” Jack London was a novelist, a journalist and a short story writer. And he did it with a particular flair and passion that makes for good all-around terrific reading for all ages.
