Ceylontoday, 2012-08-17 10:48:00 Spying allegations Maithripala goads Ranil to an open debate SLFP General Secretary and Minister of Health, Maithripala Sirisena once again challenged UNP Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe to an open debate on allegation of passing political secrets to rival candidate Chandrika Kumaratunge, with the intention of defeating UNP presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayake at the 1994 Presidential Election. Sirisena goaded the Opposition Leader to come forward for a face to face debate instead of belittling the challenge by making statements through different people. “Because of my revelation, the UNP supporters have become disgusted with the UNP leader. Therefore, this debate will help protect your party. I have once again revealed your betrayal in passing the political tactics of Gamini Dissanayake to Chandrika Kumaratunga,” Sirisena said. He added, “In the face of this revelation, your leadership is again tarnished because of your abortive attempt to extend it for six years.” He said the trend has paved the way for Ranil’s supporters to cross over to the government. Tissa says minister incapable and naive United National Party (UNP) General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake said it was a shame that Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena is trying to avoid his challenge to prove that Ranil Wickremesinghe provided inside information to Chandrika Kumaratunga during the 1994 Presidential Election. Issuing a special statement, the UNP General Secretary said, the Health Minister was exposing his inability and naivety by making various statements to avoid the challenge. Even though Sirisena stated that he is ready to reveal all the bribery and corruption that took place in the Health Ministry during the former Health Minister’s tenure, he has not done so, Attanayake said. He charged that Sirisena, as the Minister of Health, has so far not even been able to control the raging dengue epidemic. “Sirisena was unmasked before the entire country, when former President Chandrika Kumaratunga rejected the allegations,” he said, pointing out that if Wickremesinghe helped Kumaratunga to win the Presidential Election, she would not have tried to put him in jail by appointing the Batalanda Commission. He charged that the Health Minister is trying to cover up the bribery and corruption allegation in the ministry by slinging mud at political leaders. He challenged Sirisena to come to a face to face debate with all the information.
