Squad atten-shun... "There are fines for wearing uniform without the consent of the officer in command. Now, gentlemen I will tell you the purport of this rule. Do you think that if any of the members of this [Volunteer Rifle] Corps - for, let me tell you, a Corps we must have at Berkhampstead - want to go to a ball or party and wish to appear clean and spruce that your officer would object to your going in your uniform. Not a bit of it; the fine is made to meet such a case as this: - Suppose Bill or Tom in the morning, knowing that the evening was drill time, put on his uniform, and in the course of the day was called on to kill a pig or any other dirty or greasy work, instead of taking off his uniform trousers he would put on his overalls, the result would be his clothes would be dirty and greasy and unfit to appear on parade; this is what is intended to be stopped by this fine." (Lieut.-Colonel R.A. Smith Dorrien, Bucks Herald, Feb 1860).
