Designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld, the hotel is housed in an old office building and took 5 years and $40M to transform from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Set in the city’s historic district across from Students Square (Studentski Trg) and within walking distance to historical landmarks, shops, restaurants and Kalemegdan, Square Nine is a showcase of sophisticated interiors, attention to detail, and impeccable service. “Conceived by the owner as a groundbreaking keystone in Belgrade’s twenty first century renaissance, Square Nine brings a sumptuous, yet cozy, character to a city that’s long been dominated by international chains detached from the city’s identity and avant-garde, creative arts history.” The vast lobby lounge is furnished with an impressive collection of vintage Danish modern furniture which took three years to amass. Here you will also find oversized antique globes, handwoven Serbian rugs, rosewood timber panelling with framed black-and-white photos which add a dose of nostalgia. Twenty-two containers of timber were shipped from Brazil, and took roughly six months to install and polish. The hotel has 45 rooms in total including 15 suites, each balancing sleek Brazilian Cumaru timber and Portuguese limestone with cozy touches and posh accessories, including cashmere blankets, Pratesi linens and Hermés toiletries.
