Sri lanka and Myanmar Religious and Cultural Relations The sixth Sangha Council (Catha Sangayana) of Buddhists from all over the world was held in Yangon in 1956, a delegation of the Maha Sangha from Sri Lanka participated and played a leading role in the deliberations. In 1997 Most Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maithriya Mahanayake Thero was conferred the title Abhidaja Maha Ratta Guru by the Government of Myanmar He was received with great honour and driven through the streets of Yangon in a motorcade. Most Venerable Pothewala Pannasara Mahanayake Thero (1997) Most Ven. Walpola Rahula Thera (1998) and Most Ven. Madhige Pannaseeha Mahanayake Thero (2000) were conferred the titled Agga Maha Panditha also by the government of Myanmar . Myanmar temples regularly donate saffron robes and other Pirikara items to temples in Sri Lanka . In 2007, Myanmar gifted two tuskers to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy . Hon Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister visited Myanmar in December 2004 to attend the 4 th World Buddhist Summit.
