Sriharikota, Nov 5: As the the nation waited with bated breath, the launch for the Mars Orbiter Mangalyaan took off successfully. The orbiter took off at 2.38 pm from sriharikota. This is Indias first ever inter planetary venture. The orbiter is said to reach Mars orbit by September 2014.The orbiter will survey Mars atmosphere. The orbiter will Travel 780 million km in its voyage. The PSLV is said to take about 40 minutes to inject the Earths orbit. The orbiter will go around the Earth for 20-25 days. 2.30 pm Mars orbiter- Aims and facts Indias first ever mission to another planet, the Mangalyaan Mars orbiter is the result of the hard work of scientists and technicians who worked for 15 months to make the mission a success. The Mars Orbiter Mission that cost Rs 450 crore, will enter the Mars orbit on September 2014 and will analyse the atmosphere of Mars. The Mars orbiter carries five payloads: The Layman Alpha Photometer which will measure the abundance of hydrogen and deuterium. Second it carries the Methane Sensor for Mars which will measure the methane content on Mars. Third it will carry Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser which is capable of analysing the neutral composition in the range of 1 to 300 amu with mass unit resolution. Fourth, it carries Mars Colour Camera which gives the images and information of the Mars surface. Fifth the Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer, which measure the thermal emission on the planet.
