Srimad Bhagavad Gita CHAPTER 6. DHYANA YOGA “Yoga is difficult of achievement for one whose mind is unbridled, but by him; nevertheless who has the mind under restraint, and is ceaselessly thriving, it can be attained through practice, such is my conviction.” Here Lord Krishna is emphasising the importance of the mind on the subject of the science of the individual consciousness attaining communion with the ultimate consciousness (dhyanayoga). The mind is difficult to control due to its fickle and tempestuous nature is an undeniable fact; the possibility of taming the intellect depends upon generating in the mind a feeling of affection and attachment by regulating the mind to regularly reflect on the sublime, transcendental qualities of the atma or soul. It should not be assumed that the mind of its own accord turns out to be guarded since that is not the case. For one whose mind is unrestrained it is not conceivable to practice dhyanayoga; but that person who has controlled the mind by dispassion and regular practice and meditation, the opportunity for liberation from the endless cycle of birth and death in the material existence manifests. A subdued mind gives up all its vagrancy and turbulent nature, and loses its vehemence and perversity; with great composure the subdued mind gets thoroughly absorbed in the object of meditation. Even after the Yogi has possessed of a subdued mind he should ceaselessly strive to have his mind to (1) renounce all objects of enjoyments and desire for them (2) He should regard himself and also the whole of the objective world as identical (3) establish identity with God and should perceive with cosmic intellect all objects as ephemeral; (4) regard any of the authorised incarnations in the embodied form as the supreme form of the God; (5) perform enjoined duties without anticipation of rewards; the aforesaid actions are illustrative of and not the exhaustive actions to be performed by one of subdued mind.
