Srinagar, Jan 13: Senior leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and MLA-elect from Amirakadal Syed Altaf Bukhari Tuesday urged the Governor N.N Vohra to prioritize the process of relief and rehabilitation of the flood victims in Srinagar like his office took care of people displaced because of firing from border areas of Jammu. In a statement, Bukhari said the September deluge has rendered thousands of families across the Srinagar city homeless and their rehabilitation in this chilly winter must be a priority for Vohra. “These homeless and displaced families who have suffered huge damages due to devastating floods were ignored to the hilt by the NC- Congress coalition and are still struggling for life and waiting for an official help,” Bukhari observed. He remarked that now with the Governor’s rule imposed in the state money should be no constraint for disbursement of full compensation to the flood affected families. “The flood hit families have pinned their hopes on his Excellency and same needs to be responded with immediate rehabilitative measures from his office. The primary focus of the Governor should be to provide immediate relief to the flood-hit families who are facing difficult times in this winter in absence of proper shelters at their disposal,” Bukhari said. He added that since the state is now directly ruled by the central government, money should not be an excuse anymore. “Now the flood affected families must be provided every sort of help including free electricity, free ration, fuel and other essential commodities so that they can move on with their lives,” Bukhari said. The leader said that till a final call is taken on the government formation, the flood-hit victims of Srinagar cannot be put in a suspended state or sidelined with any other official excuses. “We are hopeful that the central government will not hinder in its delivery and it will act faster on its promise of complete rehabilitation of the flood victims,” Bukhari opined, adding that there should be no delay in rehabilitation of food affected families before the first snowfall or otherwise the same can prove catastrophic for these families. “God has been kind enough to us as there has been no snowfall so far. Or otherwise the same would have proven disastrous for the families who are yet to find any suitable shelter to save their children and the elderly members,” the MLA Elect observed while stressing on the administration to identify the families who are yet to receive monetary compensation against the damages suffered by them in the devastating deluge. “Those families who have been granted peanuts as an interim compensation and the left over families must be reached out immediately with full reimbursement without any delay. Similarly Mr Vohra must also focus and prioritize the restoration of the business establishments particularly the traders and shopkeepers in the City who have lost their business units along with their stocks in the worst floods ever,” Bukhari emphasized.
